Careers Library

Library Careers Guide

The purpose of our Careers Library is to provide careers information and resources for all students, Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 5. All students can research job opportunities which relate to the subjects they enjoy at school and guidance on applying for jobs. Year 11 students explore the prospectuses for local Post 16 and Further Education Colleges. Post 16 students can consult university prospectuses, current university guides and guidance for composing their ‘Personal Statement’.

The Careers Section of the Library contains books, pamphlets and leaflets covering both general and specific careers information. Some of these are priced publications, but the bulk of the information is free literature produced by professional bodies, employers etc. It is updated regularly to ensure most material is current and accurate.

The collection includes:

  • Reference materials including directories in the fields of education, training and employment

  • The main section, which contains material on specific careers

  • University and college prospectuses

The careers library material is divided into two sections.

The first, "Making Choices", deals with general information on education and employment. This section is indexed using the Careers Library Classification Index – CLCI.

The second section is arranged by a specialist scheme for careers literature, the "Connexions" Resources Centre Index – CRCI and deals with specific careers. Each section has its own index and a summary appears at the end of this Guide. All CRCI material is clearly labelled as such. Please feel free to ask for help if you cannot find the relevant information you are looking for.

Using Material

a) Books in the Careers section are for reference use only.

b) Leaflets, pamphlets etc. In some cases where the supplier of the information has been particularly generous there will be multiple copies. You may ask the Librarian if you can keep duplicates, but never remove anything of which there is only one copy.

c) Photocopying. You may photocopy from books, please ask the Librarian.

Teacher Information and Materials

Teachers are frequently the first port of call for students who need career information. As subject specialists, they are often able to advise on certain career paths. In addition to their own knowledge and experiences, we have prepared a range of resources for our staff to access and share with students as appropriate.
